Aconex staff renovate classroom at children’s home in Kuala Lumpur

Aconex staff from 20 countries volunteered their time to renovate a classroom at the Lighthouse Children Welfare Home in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Lighthouse Children Welfare Home is a privately-run foster home for underprivileged and vulnerable children, which offers accommodation, education and welfare support. The center currently supports more than 40 children; however the building is 30 years old and, due to the tropical climate, requires regular maintenance.

Aconex, which has operations across Asia including in Malaysia, partnered with consultancy firm Evans & Peck to coordinate the fitting-out and decorating of some existing, run-down space at the center to turn it into a much-needed fully-functional classroom. Around 70 Aconex staff participated in the project.

Leigh Jasper, Aconex CEO, said, “As well as contributing to the cause, we also wanted this to be a teambuilding activity and so, before arriving at the school, staff had no idea what was in store for them. They were then told that they had 6 hours to build the classroom and were split into teams for construction, decoration, catering and fundraising. It was a thoroughly rewarding experience and we were delighted by how many clients, local companies, staff members and friends in the industry lent their support.”

Jasper added, “A special thank you is due to the Pacific Regency hotel in Kuala Lumpur, which elected to make the Lighthouse home its corporate cause for December. A proportion of all food and beverage revenue will go to the home, as will money raised at the hotel's Christmas party.

“Both Aconex and the Pacific Regency are helping the home to identify other potential business supporters. The Aconex team produced a video of the event, now on YouTube, that shows potential supporters how they can get involved.

The Lighthouse Children Welfare Home is a registered Malaysian welfare organization and its founders work tirelessly to provide a nurturing and secure environment that helps children to start a new journey away from their difficult backgrounds. By providing more than just the basic necessities of food, shelter and clothing, The Lighthouse can offer the children education, aspirations and a real chance in life.

Evans & Peck specializes in providing team building activities which support community development initiatives.
