Improving project decision making

by Leigh Jasper on May 18, 2011

As discussed in a previous blog post, Aconex clients use our workflow engine to manage and track processes and decisions on their projects, including design documentation reviews, shop drawing approvals, contractor submissions, interface management and handover information.

We have noticed that along with the usage of workflows doubling each year, Aconex clients have been able to significantly shorten approval and decision times.  From an average of 4.6 days per step a few years ago, step times have reduced by nearly 30% to 3.3 days in 2010. For an average length workflow of three steps this equates to a saving of 4 days in total decision time, from 14 days (almost 3 weeks) to 10 days (or two weeks).  For longer workflows the total decision time can be reduced by several weeks.

By reducing process and decision times through the use of workflows, our clients improve the return and reduce the risk on their projects. They can:

  • Reduce direct costs, such as printing, couriers and storage
  • Boost productivity of their staff
  • Avoid disputes
  • Reduce rework
  • Prevent delays
  • Maintain compliance.

Part of this improvement is because clients are becoming more experienced at using the workflows engine. There has also been an improvement in step times since 2008, when we introduced new workflow functionality based on feedback from clients – particularly to handle bulk processing of multiple workflow tasks  I’m sure there are more ways we can help our clients to improve project decision making time frames. Please let us know of additional features you believe could help you.
